York Regional Police have charged an Ontario driver following an investigation into videos he posted on social media in which he recorded himself at dangerously high speeds and bragged about evading authorities.
In the spring, police looked into a TikTok account that featured various street racing videos across York Region and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Authorities said the driver often documented himself operating a blue 2022 BMW 5XG sedan, racing on public highways, boasting about evading police and bragging about getting away with it.
The driver did not have a front licence plate and would have a fake licence plate on the rear of the vehicle, with characters WILL RUN and SMURFY. In two alleged videos, the suspected driver wrote, “No, OPP/YRP/Peel ain’t catching this” and “No plates, no case.”
Other videos showed the suspect driver engaged in street races with other vehicles on Hwy. 407 and Hwy. 404. York Regional Police said the driver was seen driving dangerously, side-by-side close to other cars, stopping in live lanes of traffic and travelling at high rates of speed. It’s believed this happened between April 1 and August 12.
Authorities identified the male driver as an adult from Aurora, Ont., and on August 16, executed a search warrant at a residence, which involved the seizure of fake licence plates and electronic devices, among other items.
A 22-year-old man faces three counts of dangerous driving and three counts of stunt driving under the provincial Highway Traffic Act. Police said his driver’s licence was seized and suspended for 30 days, and the BMW was impounded for 14 days.
“TikTok street racer thought he could out-run the cops,” the police force wrote in a TikTok video.
The driver was not identified.
“Dangerous driving will not be tolerated in our communities,” a police spokesperson said. “It will be investigated, and our officers will be prepared to lay criminal charges when warranted.”
