Toronto police cruiser crash sends one officer to hospital

A police officer sustained minor injuries following a single-vehicle crash Saturday morning near the waterfront.

Officials say a police cruiser was travelling southbound on Dan Leckie Way around 8 a.m. and attempted to make a right turn onto Fort York Boulevard when the driver lost control, mounted the sidewalk, and struck a light pole.

A female officer who was riding in the car was taken to hospital as a precaution to be treated for minor injuries while the second officer did not sustain any injuries.

It’s unclear if the officers were responding to a call but police say “no emergency equipment was activated” at the time.

“Members of the public were put at serious risk here, it’s important that the public and municipal leaders are kept appraised of the developments of this case and TPS publicly reinforce the importance of road safety,” said David Shellnutt, lawyer and advocate at The Biking Lawyer LLP.

CityNews reached out to Toronto police to confirm if any driving under any influence was being suspected or investigated at this time, or if speed was considered a factor in losing control of the vehicle. Const. Cindy Chung said in a statement that the driver was not impaired.
