SIU investigating after 1 man killed in shooting involving police in Orillia

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a 26-year-old man was fatally shot and a police officer was stabbed in Orillia.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says Ontario Provincial Police were called around 2 p.m. Thursday to a residence on Barrie Road for reports of an altercation. An investigation led them to an individual a few blocks away on Cochrane Street where an “officer-involved” shooting resulted in the death of one man.

“This man had an edged weapon, a knife of some sort, and there was an interaction …an officer was stabbed and there was a discharge of a firearm, multiple times,” said SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette, who added that a second officer had discharged their taser during the incident.

The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The officer was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
