A former Toronto Police Services (TPS) officer has been charged with a historical sexual assault that allegedly occurred more than 40 years ago, the province’s police watchdog said.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was notified of allegations against the former TPS officer on March 13, 2024.
The alleged incident occurred in Toronto between 1981 and 1982 against a woman when the former officer was a member of the TPS force. The SIU said the accused has since retired.
On Wednesday, the province’s police watchdog announced that Luigi DiLorenzo was charged with one count of gross indecency, contrary to section 157 of the Criminal Code.
DiLorenzo is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 5, 2025.
According to a LinkedIn profile that matches the name of the accused, DiLorenzo worked with the Toronto Police Service from 1976 to 2008. He then transitioned to the role of a private investigator and was an instructor at Humber College.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that probes incidents where people died or were seriously injured. Investigators also review incidents where sexual assault has been alleged or a firearm was discharged at a person.
