Garbage truck driver killed in Hwy 401 crash near Pickering

A 44-year-old garbage truck driver from North York is dead following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 401 near Pickering on Sunday morning.

Ontario Provincial Police say the crash occurred in the westbound lanes of the highway approaching Port Union Road just before 9 a.m.

Police say the driver of the garbage truck was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A passenger in the truck suffered minor injuries.

Investigators did not indicate what led up to the crash, except to say no other vehicles were involved.

The westbound collector lanes were closed for multiple hours for an investigation and reopened before 5 p.m.
