Downtown Toronto’s T.D. Building Wins Major Environmental Award

We’ve all seen the green T.D. logo, and now the T.D. building in downtown Toronto has earned its own recognition, winning Canada ‘s top environmental award, Go Green Plus.

The building has been able to reduce its energy use by 27%, saving 12 million kilowatt hours last year.   That’s the equivalent of taking 2,300 cars off the road.

Much of the conservation came when they replaced their massive energy-sucking air conditioner with a new, more environmentally-friendly model.

“The technology here is original,” said Rob Furlan, Operations Director, Cadillac Fairview.   “It’s from 1967. This building is 1.3 million square feet and it has about 53 occupied floors, and that’s why we (had) such a large refrigeration system here.”

This air conditioner was shut down in 2004 to make way for a much more efficient deep water cooling system.

“It replaces the air conditioning system … and it takes about 1-15th of the space,” Furlon adds.

Employees are happy that it’s not just their logo that’s green.

“Every place should try to be as green as possible.  I mean we’re doing this for our children, right, so they have a world to inherit,” said mail clerk Nick Van Der Graff.

“Even at our end, we take initiatives to actually save paper. You know, try to print less if required, so I’m definitely proud of that,” adds Aureil Cordeiro of Capital Management.
