Three Canuck filmmakers cheering Oscar nods for animated films

Three Canadians who helmed animated films were celebrating Oscar nominations Thursday.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 director Dean DeBlois, fresh off a Golden Globe win for best animated feature, is now up for an Academy Award in the same category. He’s from Aylmer, Que.
Graham Annable of Sault Ste Marie, Ont., is also nominated for a best animated feature Oscar as a co-director for The Boxtrolls.
And Norway-born, Montreal-raised Torill Kove is up for a prize in the best animated short film category for Me and My Moulton.
She won the Oscar in the same category in 2007 for The Danish Poet and was nominated for her animated short My Grandmother Ironed the King’s Shirts in 2000.
Craig Mann, who grew up in the Toronto area, is also nominated for sound mixing for his work on Whiplash.
The Tegan and Sara performance of the song Everything is Awesome from The Lego Movie is up for best original song, with the nomination going to songwriter Shawn Patterson.
Birdman earned nine nods, including best picture, and nominations for its three main actors – Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton. The film tied for the most nods with The Grand Budapest Hotel, which in addition to best film, picked up nods for its colorful production design, costumes and makeup.
The awards air on Feb. 22, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.
