Mississauga city council to replace Lord’s Prayer with moment of silence

Mississauga city council has passed a motion to replace the Lord’s Prayer with a moment of silence to commence its meetings.

Ward 2 councillor Karen Ras brought the motion forward.

It passed unanimously.

“It’s a thoughtful way to give everyone a minute to reflect on things that are important,” said Ras in a City of Mississauga release.

“Beginning our meetings with a moment of silence provides an opportunity for self-reflection, a time of remembrance, observance of an emergency or paying respect towards a tragic event.”

On April 29, council decided to end the practice of reciting the Lord’s Prayer.

Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie applauded the move to replace the prayer with a moment of silence.

“A silent reflection is something that is inclusive for everyone,” she said.

“Members of Council and those attending the meeting can use the time to think about whatever is important to them. It also gives us the ability to acknowledge and recognize issues that are happening around the world.”

The 30-second moment of silence begins on May 20.
