The Ottawa Senators moved to within one game of eliminating the Pittsburgh Penguins from the 2007 Stanley Cup playoffs after earning a narrow 2-1 win on Tuesday night.
Anton Volchenkov’s goal midway through the third period held up as the winner and pushed the Pens to the brink of post-season exile.
The Sens will take a 3-1 series lead into Game 5 on Thursday night.
“Going back home, we want to bury them,” Ottawa ‘s Jason Spezza said. “We don’t want to come back here and give them life.
“When you get a team on the ropes, you want to try to knock them out.”
Volchenkov scored only once in 78 games during the regular season, but managed to slip one between the pipes when it counted most Tuesday.
“I don’t score much but I scored a very big goal,” said Volchenkov. “It was a great, great play, a pass for me . . . and not too much traffic.
“I might be a little bit lucky.”
The Sens effectively shut out Sidney Crosby, who was held without a goal for the first time in the series. Rookie Evgeni Malkin has been largely invisible, failing to score thus far.
