Good Samaritans save woman, 89, from oncoming commuter train

A couple of quick-thinking drivers helped save an elderly woman from being hit by a New Jersey train this past week.

The 89-year-old woman, using two canes, attempts to cross the railway track. Midway through her trek, the crossing arms come down.

John Mango had just pulled up to the crossing when he noticed the woman wasn’t going to make it across the roadway in time. With the train’s horn blowing in the distance, the 28-year-old leaps into action.

“The red light started blinking and then just started going down,” explained Mango. “And even in the video, I can hear myself going ‘No!’ So then I just jump out of the car and I run as quick as I can to try to get her out of the way.”

At first the woman is reluctant to accept Mango’s help, fearing he is trying to harm her. He is then joined by another unidentified man, and the three safely make it across the road just the commuter train barrels past them.

Mango is being called a hero for his actions.

“This proves to me that our society, our people, are full of good people,” said Saddle Brook police chief Robert Kugler. “And yesterday, for whatever reason, God put John in Saddle Brook and on Marcus Street to witness this incident and save this woman from death.”
