Blue Jays recall Laffey, send down Beck

The Toronto Blue Jays recalled veteran pitcher Aaron Laffey and sent reliever Chad Beck back to Las Vegas, the club announced on Monday.

Laffey has made nine starts with triple-A Las Vegas this season where he compiled a 2-5 record with a 4.88 ERA. The left-handed veteran was in competition for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation during spring training.

The Blue Jays needed to bolster their bullpen after a three-game series against the Texas Rangers where the relief pitchers combined to pitch 18.2 innings in three consecutive losses.

Laffey’s last start was on May 24 so he would likely be available to pitch out of the bullpen in Monday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles at the Rogers Centre.

Beck has been optioned back to triple-A one day after being recalled by the Blue Jays. He has made 19 appearances with Las Vegas this season where he has a 1-0 record with a 1.31 ERA and seven saves.
