Thriller ‘The Possession’ tops weekend box office

Supernatural thriller The Possession topped the weekend box office, taking in US $17.7 million over the Labour Day weekend.

The creepy movie follows a young girl who buys a mysterious box at a yard sale. The wooden trinket opens, unleashing evil spirits on the girl and her family.

The movie beat out western Lawless, which made $9.67 million according to BoxOfficeMojo.com. Lawless is based on Matt Bondurant’s 2008 true-life novel The Wettest County in the World and follows three bootlegger brothers in Prohibition-era Virginia.

Rounding out the top three was The Expendables 2, which made $11.2 million.

Meanwhile, kid-flick Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure made just $448,000, setting a new record:

While the September long weekend is typically slow at the box office, Oogieloves scored the worst opening ever for a movie that opened in more than 2,000 theatres.

The dubious title was previously held by Delgo. The 2008 movie made $511,920 in its opening weekend.
