Chances are, if you’re over 16, you haven’t heard of them. Chances are even better, though, that if you’re under 16, you were lined up outside 299 Queen West Thursday.
The Jonas Brothers played an intimate set at the corner of Queen and John Thursday, the day before their sold out show at the Molson Amphitheatre.
Fresh off a month long engagement opening for Canadian pop princess Avril Lavigne in Europe, the three singing siblings will kick off their own tour in North America.
Still not ringing a bell?
Maybe you’ve heard of Miley Cyrus, or her alter ego Hannah Montana? (Maybe her Vanity Fair spread caught your, um, attention.) The trio opened for Cyrus on her 54-date “Best of Both Worlds” tour, and appeared on her hit show on the Disney channel.
Lest you think they’re just another Disney creation, however, the band actually got their start on Broadway.
Youngest brother Nick, currently 15 years old, got his start on Broadway at the age of six. Joe, now 18, followed him to the Great White Way.
That led to a short solo career for Nick, who recorded an album for Columbia. But a change at the top brought a significant shake-up in their lives: New president Steve Greenberg (who, not incidentally, also discovered Hanson) didn’t like the album, and asked Nick to form a group instead.
Nick, Joe, and 20-year-old Kevin united to become the Jonas Brothers. But even more turmoil lay ahead: after releasing one record, they were dropped by Columbia in early 2007.
They then signed with Disney’s Hollywood Records, and it was in August of 2007 that they appeared on the channel’s juggernaut, Hannah Montana.
Cue the screaming fans.
Tweenage vocal cords – and spending power – put their current CD at #10 on the Canadian best-seller list (Coldplay captured the number one spot); and their fan-centered videos on heavy rotation.
Still not enough?
You’ll have your chance to get your fill: The Mouse isn’t letting them get away with just a tour – they’ve got a movie coming to the big screen called “Camp Rock;” concert footage is constantly being filmed for 3D specials and DVD packages; and more than one Disney channel original series in the works.
Fans are getting ready to MMMBop along with the band for years to come. Oh wait – that was a Hanson song. Hey, remember them?
