Christopher Plummer To Reprise His Role In “Barrymore” At Elgin Theatre

Christopher Plummer will be stage hopping in southern Ontario, making the move from Stratford to Toronto to once again portray Shakespearean acting legend John Barrymore at the Eglin Theatre this winter.

Plummer, who’s currently playing Prospero in “The Tempest” at the Stratford Festival, will hit the stage of the Elgin Theatre Jan. 27 in “Barrymore”. The show will run through to March 9, 2011.

The 80-year-old actor first played the role at the show’s premiere at Stratford back in 1996. It then opened on Broadway and toured across the United States. Plummer won a best actor Tony in 1997 for his performance.

The version to be staged at the Elgin Theatre will feature the original team in its entirety, including director Gene Saks, who’s a three-time Tony winner.

Plummer was nominated for an Oscar last year. He got a best supporting actor nod for his portrayal of Leo Tolstoy in “The Last Station”. It was his first Academy Award nomination.

“The Tempest” at Stratford closes Sept. 13.

Tickets for “Barrymore” go on sale Oct. 2.
