An investigation into high-profile Instagram accounts from the Toronto-area that posted images and audio of sensitive court proceedings has led to a slew of charges.
Back on Feb. 23, it’s alleged the Instagram accounts “thehood6ix” and “thewarinda6ix” posted photos of a witness who had been testifying during a preliminary hearing via video.
A day later, the same accounts plus two others “straightouttathe6ixtv” and “keep6ixsolid” posted an audio recording of the same witness.
One of the accounts has about 21,000 followers.
It’s illegal to take photos inside a courtroom whether the proceedings are in person or virtual.
In a release, Toronto police say “these actions served to obstruct the course of justice and intimidate a justice system participant.”
At the time, there was a publication ban covering the case.
Earlier this month, the Toronto Police Service executed a number of search warrants at addresses in Toronto and Brampton as part of Project VWAP.
Four men — between the ages of 20 – 32 — have been charged on several counts, including Intimidation of a Justice System Participant and Obstruct Justice.
During the search, a firearm and ammunition were also found — resulting in additional charges for one of the accused.
The men have another court date scheduled for Dec. 14.
