The Festival of Lights: Hanukkah celebrations begin at sundown

Tonight is a special one for the Jewish faith as sundown marks the first night of Hanukkah.
The religious holiday lasts for eight nights, representing how long the Maccabees oil burned. It’s considered a miracle because it was only supposed to be enough for one day.
On Sunday, Premier Doug Ford issued a statement to mark the beginning of Hanukkah.
“Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Jewish people over persecution and oppression and the forces of light over darkness. It is a time to celebrate miracles, both big and small, and reflect on how blessed we are to live where our religious and cultural freedoms are protected,” Ford said.
“This year, families can once again gather safely to celebrate as long as we continue to follow public health guidance, and we can share special holiday traditions with our loved ones. On behalf of my family and the people of Ontario, I wish all those celebrating a Happy Hanukkah! Chag Hanukkah Sameach!”
Every night, Jewish people light the menorah adding one lit candle until the end of the eight-night celebration.
Some of the delicious traditions include a jelly-filled donut called sufganiyah and fried potatoes called latkes.
