Ten per cent of Toronto kids have now received first COVID-19 shot

The city of Toronto is marking another huge vaccination milestone — this time, for children.

Since Team Toronto Kids officially kicked off their campaign to get shots in the arms of kids aged five to 11 five days ago on Nov. 25, 10 per cent of kids have already received their first dose.

“These kids are superheroes who are helping us fight this pandemic. The COVID-19 vaccine provides the best protection possible against this virus and helps protect you, your family and your city. I continue to encourage all residents to get vaccinated as soon as possible so we can protect our progress as a city,” said Mayor John Tory.

So far, the shot has been administered to more than 21,000 children.

As of now nearly 59,000 appointments have been made for dates up to Dec. 24 at City-run immunization clinics. Officials say they are limited appointments still available at clinics this week.

Team Toronto is also continuing to make progress in their initiative to get youth 12 and older vaccinated.  More than 85 per cent of these residents have now received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and 89 per cent of the group have gotten at least one dose.

“From our City-based clinics, to schools, doctors’ offices and pharmacies, our Team Toronto Kids approach means that there are a range of options across Toronto to make vaccination accessible for every family,” Spadina-Fort York Councillor Joe Cressy added.

Team Toronto recently announced Toronto Kids Vaccine Day, which will see 2,000 kids get vaccinated on Dec. 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Scotiabank Arena.
