Mother Nature decided to usher in the new year with a winter wonderland.

Toronto and most of the GTA are under a weather advisory, with Environment Canada saying total snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 cm are expected by the time the snow comes to an end through Sunday.

“The snow will continue into Sunday morning before coming to an end from west to east through the day. Peak snowfall rates of 1 to 2 cm per hour will be possible tonight,” Environment Canada says.

Canada’s weather agency says 5 to 15 cm is likely to fall across southern Ontario into southern Québec. The western shores around Hamilton and areas from Kingston to Cornwall stand to see 10-15 cm of snow.

“Travel may be hazardous as untreated surfaces are expected to become snow-covered and icy,” EC continued.

“Motorists should expect hazardous winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

Widespread wind gusts of 40-60 km/h across southern Ontario are expected. Daytime highs will fall below freezing on Sunday across southern Ontario, making it feel colder.

Toronto is expected to reach a daytime high of -5 C, feeling more like -11 C. The sunshine will return on Monday with temperatures hovering around -4 C and wind settling.
