Suspected drugs found in locked box at Canadian side of Ambassador Bridge: police

Windsor police say a suspicious package that led to a closure of the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Windsor, Ont., to Detroit, for several hours contained suspected drugs.

Police say just before 9 p.m. on Sunday they received a report about a suspicious locked box that was found inside a car that had been pulled over on the Canadian side of the bridge.

At the time, police tweeted that the Canadian side of the bridge would be closed down for the investigation.

“The Windsor Police Service’s Explosive Disposal Unit has determined that a suspicious package found on the Ambassador Bridge last night wasn’t an explosive device or capable of causing harm,” police tweeted.

Police said the contents of the locked box included “an electronic scale, drug paraphernalia and suspected narcotics.”

The Canadian Border Services Agency is now investigating.

Around 10 p.m. Sunday, police said the bridge would be closed for an “indeterminate period of time” and then an hour later stated it would be “opening for traffic soon” without giving any further details.

The bridge reopened early Monday morning.

The bridge sees more than 40,000 commuters, tourists and truck drivers carrying $323 million worth of goods across the border each day.

It was the scene of a week-long blockade back in February as protesters choked off access to the border crossing while demonstrating against COVID-19 measures.

Premier Doug Ford declared a state of emergency as politicians on both sides of the border decried the economic impact the protest was having on the flow of goods at one of the busiest border crossings in the country.
