Residents in Scarborough will be returning to the polls for a second time this summer.
Premier Doug Ford has called two byelections for July 27 in the electoral districts of Scarborough-Guildwood and Kanata-Carleton.
The Scarborough seat became vacant when Liberal Mitzie Hunter stepped down to run in the Toronto mayor’s race, which wrapped up on Monday. She finished sixth in the contest with just under three per cent of the vote.
The Liberals have nominated Andrea Hazell, a small business owner and President of the Scarborough Business Association, while the Conservatives will be represented by city councillor Gary Crawford. The NDP have nominated Thadsha Navaneethan as their candidate.
Hunter, a former education minister, had represented Scarborough-Guildwood since 2013.
The Kanata-Carleton seat became open after Merrilee Fullerton abruptly resigned from both her post as minister of children, community and social services and her seat in March.
The Conservatives have nominated Sean Webster to run in the riding, former MP Karen McCrimmon returns from a two-year hiatus from politics to run for the Liberals, Melissa Coenraad is the NDP nominee, and Steven Warren is the Greens candidate.
Another byelection is likely in the works, as Laura Mae Lindo – who represents Kitchener-Centre for the NDP – has indicated she will resign next month.
