A 25-year-old man from Pickering has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his mother, according to authorities.
Durham Regional Police say they were called to a residential area near Foxwood Trail and Weyburn Square just after 5:00 a.m. on Sunday for reports of a possible collision.
Upon arrival officers spotted a vehicle crashed into a tree and then found 64-year-old Sheila Hercules suffering from “life-threatening injuries.” She was taken to a Toronto-area hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Investigators later determined that her injuries were the result of an alleged assault, and not the collision.
“This seems to be just a one off incident and is not related to anything ongoing,” Duty Inspector Andre Wyatt told reporters on Sunday.
Authorities have charged the woman’s 25-year-old son, Aidan Hercules, with second-degree murder.
The circumstances leading up to the alleged assault have not been released, but officers say no further suspects are outstanding and there is no threat to public safety.
This incident mark Durham region’s 10th homicide of the year.
