A 44-year-old man has died after a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 27 at Highway 409 in north Etobicoke, Toronto police confirm.
The crash involving six vehicles occurred around 6:15 a.m. on Wednesday.
Police said a 61-year-old man was driving a Ford Escape southbound on Highway 27, approaching Belfield, in the left turn lane when it struck a Mazda Protege from behind, and caused a chain-reaction collision.
The Mazda was also trying to make a left turn to eastbound Belfield at the time. The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at hospital.
Three other drivers suffered “various levels of injury,” police said.
“We are looking to see if there is any contributing factor from the design of the intersection that may have contributed to the collision; however, at this point that isn’t clear,” Stibbe said.
“We do have a number of collisions — not necessarily at this particular intersection but in the area in general.”
Highway 27 was closed in all directions at Belfield Road but reopened at around noon.
