The toddler who died after an incident at a home daycare was laid to rest in Mississauga Wednesday.
Fourteen-month-old Duy-An Nguyen was taken off life support on Jan. 7, two days after she was rushed to the Hospital for Sick Children from April’s Day Care, run by April Lukese out of her townhouse near the QEW and Cawthra Road.
It was only the child’s second day attending the daycare.
Lukese, 35, is charged with second-degree murder. She’ll remain in custody until her next court appearance, scheduled for Jan. 21.
The child’s funeral mass was held at 11am at St. Salvador Do Mundo Catholic Church on Melton Drive. Steven Nguyen, a member of the church, described the service as solemn and “emotional”.
The tragic incident prompted child care advocates and the Ontario Federation of Labour to demand a coroner’s inquest into the death. They also want officials to look into failures in the province’s childcare system.
Long waits for licensed childcare are forcing many parents to seek out unlicensed and unregulated services, the groups say.
