Police are investigating the city’s ninth murder of the year – a shooting that was captured on surveillance video.
The victim has been identified as Gregory Taylor, 21.
Around 1:30am on Friday, emergency crews were called to a residence on Clearview Heights – near Black Creek and Trethewey drives – after area residents reported hearing gunshots.
“I heard the gunshots and they were really loud,” one woman said. “I figured it was right outside my window so I went right on the floor.”
The video depicts the victim leaving his mother’s apartment. After he meets with some people in a car, the vehicle pulls away and Taylor starts running back to the building. As he approaches the front door, a gunman standing nearby starts shooting.
“It’s abundantly obvious when he comes out he is going towards that vehicle willingly. You can see Mr. Taylor leave, look around…he walks towards a parked vehicle … as soon as Mr. Taylor gets to that vehicle, he immediately turn around and runs back towards the camera,” said Det. Justin Vander Heyden.
Taylor got back inside the apartment, only to die in front of his family. Police were familiar with Taylor and believe he knew his killer.
“(His family is) shattered, absolutely shattered,” Det. Vander Heyden adds. ” My partner and I met with them this afternoon and they are absolutely decimated. Apparently Mr. Taylor is one of nine children, the oldest, and was thought to be the one that would succeed.”
