Toronto is on track to run out of telephone numbers in five years and now the CRTC is looking at giving the city a third area code.
On Tuesday the CRTC announced that the Canadian Numbering Administrator, the authority that doles out telephone numbers, warned Toronto is expected to run out of communication combinations by 2015.
The 416 code is almost completely used up and 647 has only about 2.5 million numbers left. The CRTC plans to establish a Relief Planning Committee to look into the issue.
The new code will reportedly be chosen this fall, but won’t be put into use for four years.
Each Canadian area code has the potential for 7.5 million unique numbers.
