Mountie killed in B.C. crash with semi-trailer

An RCMP officer in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey, B.C., has been killed in an early-morning collision with a semi-trailer.

The crash occurred just before 5 a.m. and the Mountie was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

Paramedics arriving at the scene found the officer pinned and unconscious in the shattered, grey, unmarked cruiser.

The intersection in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood, has been closed since the pre-dawn crash as officers try to determine what happened.

The big rig was not hauling a trailer at the time, but police have not offered any other details about the driver or the truck.

The name of the RCMP officer has not been released, although detachment officials are expected to comment within the next few hours.
