Majority approve of Scarborough subway: poll

A new poll from Forum Research Inc. shows that six in 10 Torontonians approve of city council’s decision to build a Scarborough subway extension rather than an LRT.
The telephone survey of 1,368 people, which was conducted on Monday, shows 59 per cent approved of council’s decision while 33 per cent disapproved and eight per cent didn’t have an opinion.
“The transit experts may not agree, but city council appears to have caught the public’s enthusiasm at the crest and made the correct political decision on the Scarborough subway extension,” Forum’s president Lorne Bozinoff said in a release.
Support for the subway was split when residents were told it’d have four fewer stops than an LRT. Only 43 per cent approved of the subway, while 44 per cent disapproved.
Nearly half of Torontonians (45 per cent) said it’s more important to build the Scarborough subway now than it is to build the Sheppard LRT, from which the funds may come (33 per cent).
A small minority believe both should be built now (13 per cent) while four per cent think neither should be built.
Nearly half of Torontonians (48 per cent) disagreed with a half per cent property tax rate hike to help pay for the Scarborough subway, while 42 per cent agreed with the increase.
Poll results are considered to be accurate plus or minus three percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
