Sam the Record Man sign won’t be lighting up Yonge

The iconic Sam the Record Man neon sign won’t be lighting up Yonge Street after the City of Toronto let Ryerson University off the hook.

In 2008, the university signed an agreement with the city to purchase the land at Yonge and Gould streets, where Sam’s flagship store was located for 46 years. The school promised to restore and hang the iconic sign once its new student learning centre was finished at the location.

But recently it raised architectural, environmental and safety concerns.

On Wednesday, a city committee voted 7-4 to allow Ryerson to amend its agreement with the city and ordered it to find a new location for the Sam sign.

The university has a year to come up with a new location.
