Border security guards representing the Customs and Immigration Union staged a raucous protest outside Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s office in Toronto on Thursday.
Union members picketed outside the Parliament Street office, saying they have been without a contract for over three years. They’re looking for fair wages and benefits that are on par with other branches of law enforcement.
Mark Weber, First National Vice President of the Customs and Immigration Union, said the union had asked for a one-on-one meeting with Morneau and the finance minister had refused, prompting the protest.
“We deserve to be treated fairly,” he said. “We are no longer interested in any more lip service about us being Canada’s first line of defence. We want a fair contract.”
The union has vowed to continue protests in front of Morneau’s office until its members get a contract.
