France advanced to the second round with a 2-0 win over Togo and Switzerland clinched Group G by beating South Korea 2-0 during Friday’s World Cup action.
Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry both scored for France, which last won a World Cup match in the 1998 final.
“We’re happy to get out of this group,” France coach Raymond Domenech said. “All the matches were close.
“It was not easy and went right to the end.”
South Korea were eliminated after Switzerland shut them out with impeccable defence.
Philippe Senderos headed in a free kick and Alexander Frei added a disputed goal in the 77th minute in Hanover.
“We deservedly won and now we’re proud to be in the top 16 in the world,” Frei said.
The South Koreans were upset with the officiating in the game.
“We played so hard today but still have so much to learn,” Lee Chun-soo said. “The second goal was nonsense.”
