After three relatively easy wins against the hapless Atlanta Braves, the Toronto Blue Jays were given a wakeup call on Friday night, falling 6-1 to the National League-leading New York Mets.
David Wright had all the right moves, blasting a three-run homer, and Tom Glavine won his ninth straight to snap Toronto’s three game winning streak.
Glavine (11-2), who has not lost since April 24, leads the majors in wins. The 40-year-old now stands tied with Robin Roberts for 25th on baseball’s all-time win list. Both have an impressive 286 victories under their belt.
Rookie Lastings Milledge hit a solo homer to add to the onslaught.
The game marked the return of Carlos Delgado, who was back in Toronto for the first time since leaving as a free agent following the 2004 season. He received a rousing ovation from the crowd at the Rogers Centre but didn’t find much success on the field, finishing 0-3 with a walk and two strike-outs for New York.
Blue Jays rookie Casey Janssen gave up five runs on eight hits over six innings, losing his third straight start.
The only run Toronto managed to score came in the sixth when Reed Johnson led off with a triple and later touched home on a sacrifice fly by Alex Rios.
