Thirty-four-year-old Dorothy Sauve was killed on impact and her 17-month-old son Matthew was pronounced dead at hospital after their car was struck by an oncoming Jeep on Highway 12 near Whitby Saturday night.
The mother was reportedly on her way to Orillia to pick up her husband when her Pontiac Grand-Am was hit.
The passenger in the Jeep Cheroke, 24-year-old Salman Javed, was also killed.
Authorities claim the Jeep was trying to pass another vehicle on the highway when it hit Sauve and her son.
Authorities allegedly found evidence of open alcohol in that car when they were inspecting the wreckage. The driver is now facing charges.
“There was alcohol on his breath and there were empty cans of – I believe they were cans of beer in the vehicle,” OPP Const. David Woodford alleges.
The man is facing several counts of dangerous driving – each charge carries a maximum sentence of 14 years – but he has not been charged with any alcohol-related offences.
Meanwhile, Sauve’s neighbours are still shocked over the news of the tragedy.
“Very fine person. She’ll be greatly missed,” Sauve’s neighbour Linda Tapley said.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed this accident to contact them, as they are still investigating the crash. If you can help, call the OPP Whitby detachment at (905) 668-3388.
