Weir Struggles During Second Round Of Canadian Open

Former Masters champion Mike Weir had a brutal sound round at the Canadian Open in Hamilton on Friday, finishing 4-over for his round and 5-over for the tournament, well over the projected cut of even par.

“It’s disappointing I didn’t play well,” Weir admitted.

Despite hopes of a hometown hero triumphing on native soil, it was American Aaron Oberholser who took a two-stroke lead Friday.

Oberholser is 3-under through 13 holes and 8-under for the tournament.   He currently has a two-stroke lead over a group of eight golfers.

Tournament organizers received some bad news Friday when Calgary’s Stephen Ames withdrew with a back strain. Ames pulled out after nine holes of the second round. He was 4-over on the day and 5-over for the tournament.

“As the day went on, it got worse and worse and worse,” said Ames. “At this stage right now, I decided to withdraw because it’s just getting harder and harder for me to swing the club.

“I guess it’s all the poor swinging for the last couple months. It’s aggravated it even more.”
