Paramedics were called to a portion of the course near Bay and Wellington around 9am where they performed CPR on 41-year-old Martin Poyser of Toronto, who had no vital signs when emergency crews arrived. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
Some 10,000 athletes from 30 countries took part in the 42.2 kilometre run, the half marathon or the 5km walk for kids.
Daniel Rono of Kenya was the first man to finish the marathon with a time of 2:10:14 and Malgorzata Sobanska of Poland was the fastest woman with a time of 2:34:31.
And a Canadian runner broke an incredible record – 75-year-old Ed Whitlock was the fastest marathoner 75 or over, finishing with an impressive time of 3:08:37.
“It was nice to do the record, but I kind of suffered near the end…I ran too fast at the beginning,” Whitlock said.
Another competitor will go down in the Guinness Book of World Records for his efforts. Toronto’s Michal “The Joggler” Kapral completed the marathon while juggling three objects in just two hours, 57 minutes and 53 seconds.
“I love juggling,” Kapral said. “But that was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”
Runners who completed the grueling circuit also raised money for over 45 charities.
