It ended almost as fast it happened.
Toronto Police swooped down on a bank robbery in progress Thursday and were almost able to catch the crook in the act.
It began during the noon hour when a man entered the Scotiabank at Queen and Church Sts. He went up to the teller and demanded money. But before he could get far, police were hot on his trail.
“An excellent description was given by the bank employees,” recounts Sgt. Dan McDermott. “We found the suspect just here on Mutual and Queen. The suspect was arrested with all the money. A dye pack went off so it was quite easy to spot the suspect with the dye on him and not on the money. So it looks like all the money’s been recovered.”
Cops were forced to engage in a brief foot chase to bring their suspect down. But his two legs couldn’t outrun their two wheels.
“The suspect ran eastbound from Queen and Church. Our officers on bikes are a little faster and caught up with him, took him down.”
How did they get there so fast? It wound up being a combination of luck and experience.
Police were in the area keeping a close eye on banks and other financial institutions after a rash of robberies in the past few days.
