Cards Take World Series In Game 5

The underdog St. Louis Cardinals won their first World Series in nearly a quarter century Friday night, beating the pesky but out-played Detroit Tigers 4-2 to take the series in five games.

Jeff Weaver put in a dominant performance on the mound and David Eckstein drove in two runs to lead the way.

Not many expected the Cardinals to secure baseball’s most coveted honour.   They won just 83 regular-season games and almost missed the playoffs after a disastrous late-season slump.

But the Cards pulled it all together once the post-season got underway, beating San Diego and the New York Mets before claiming their first title since 1982.

Manager Tony LaRussa wasn’t buying all the ‘underdog’ talk.

“The team that wears the world championship is the team that plays the best,” he said.

“And this year, we played the best.”

The Tigers made things a little easier on them by committing two untimely errors Friday.   Such gaffes seemed to plague Detroit, which had eight total errors in the series and three by third baseman Brandon Inge.
