Manufacturers make the majority of their profits during this do-or-die season and while they may specialize in child’s play, each one is determined to outdo their competitor with the latest and greatest high tech advancement.
Which brings us to the items featured at the Canadian Toy Association’s preview of the hottest playthings for Christmas this year.
Here’s where to find more information on the top tech toys:
(MSRP=Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price)
Disney Fairies
The fairy dolls are cool enough, but add them to a special playhouse and they’ll magically travel by themselves in a wonderland world. MSRP: $9.99-79.99
Furreal Friends Butterscotch Pony
This incredible large pony not only looks the part, it acts it, responding to a child’s voice and touch with realistic motions and sounds. The manufacturer notes that it comes with its own carrot, brush and halter. What more could you want? MSRP: $350
LEGO Mindstorms NXT
Forget those old building blocks. This thing makes that stuff look like, well, Lincoln Logs. The product allows kids to build different versions of a robot and program their creation to perform certain functions. MSRP: $349.99
Bratz Big Babyz Crazy Karaoke
A plaything to sing about. This doll actually lets your kids sing along with one of five different songs. Which tunes? Why, the ones from a DVD movie based on the toy, of course. It beats singing alone. MSRP: $49.99
Love N Grow Suzie
If you’re a baby boomer, you probably remember when dolls seemed to come alive. You had plastic playthings that ate, walked, talked and wet the bed. But up until now, you never had one that actually grew. Which is where “Suzie” comes in. Not only does this toy grow in stature, her speech and play actually grow up with her.
And she’ll even remind your kids she’s too big for all those baby accessories they’ll try to put on her. She also features voice recognition, can play games and sings. MSRP: $99.99
Fly Pentop Computer
This incredible device allows your kid to make math fun. Sounds impossible? Just draw some numbers, an equal sign, a multiplication symbol and more, and touch the pen to each symbol and the ‘toy’ gives you the correct answer.
It also lets you draw an instrument and record your own tunes to the pen. MSRP: $99.99
iTattoo
“I ink, therefore I am.” It’s not quite the philosophy Descartes would appreciate but then he never had access to this toy. It allows kids to design their own tattoos and apply it to anything using their special pen. But don’t worry – everything’s non-toxic and washable. MSRP: $19.99
Game Wave
A series of interactive games that are not only fun to play but let kids learn while they do it. You just don’t have to tell them that. MSRP: $24.99
Storytime Theatre
The Give A Show Projector of the modern age. This device allows you to read a book to your kids while projecting the colourful picture pages onto a wall. MSRP: $49.99
