Home field advantage just wasn’t enough for the Saskatchewan University Huskies.
Despite playing in front of more than 12,000 very cold but raucous fans in Saskatoon Saturday, it was the No. 2-ranked Laval University Rouge et Or that claimed the 2006 Vanier Cup by a score of 13-8.
It was defence that was the difference, as the Quebec school held their opponents to 10 points or less for the fourth time in as many appearances in the Canadian University football final.
Laval becomes the second team in history to capture three CIS football titles over a four-season period. Western is the only other program to do so, earning three titles between 1974-77.
The Rouge et Or opened the scoring in the second quarter on a 26-yard Cameron Takacs field goal, and after conceding a safety late in the half responded with a one-yard touchdown from Guillaume Allard-Caméus.
Tyler O’Gorman gave the Saskatchewan faithful something to cheer about with a three-yard touchdown rush in the fourth, but the potential game-tying two-point convert attempt failed when Bret Thompson’s pass was broken up in the end zone.
A short time later Laval linebacker Éric Maranda sewed things up by intercepting a Thompson pass at the Saskatchewan 30-yard line, setting up a 15-yard Takacs field goal with 44 seconds left.
Maranda, who had seven solo tackles, received the Ted Morris Trophy as Vanier Cup MVP.
2007 will see the Vanier Cup come to Rogers Centre in Toronto on November 23.
