Greg Page, the founder of the supergroup The Wiggles, confirmed on Thursday that what appears to be a lifelong illness will keep him from performing again.
The 34-year-old is suffering from an obscure disorder known as orthostatic intolerance.
“It’s not a life-threatening condition by any means, but it is one that’s going to be with me for the rest of my life,” he acknowledges in a video statement.
“It means that I’ll no longer be able to sing and dance as I want to, and as a result I’ve decided to stop performing with The Wiggles.”
The man in the yellow T-shirt has handed over his signature coloured clothing to his understudy Sam Moran, who will take his place.
Fellow band members expressed regret at the unfortunate turn of events. Page is not only their co-worker and the co-founder of the group, but a close friend.
But will kids notice the difference? Murray Cook – a.k.a. The Red Wiggle – hopes they won’t.
“Children tend to centre on one thing so if he’s wearing the yellow skivvy (shirt), he’s got black hair – he’s pretty much Greg,” he predicts.
The Wiggles are the top earning entertainers in their native Australia, beating out Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe. They have reached enormous popularity in Canada, where their appearances regularly sell out.
