After falling to Atlanta 5-0 in their last meeting, the Toronto Maple Leafs were fully aware of the potential for explosive offence that the Thrashers possessed.
Leading up to Tuesday night’s game, they vowed to be fully prepared for the likes of snipers Ilya Kovalchuk and Marian Hossa. But going into the third period with a relatively cushy two-goal lead, the Leafs seemed to sit back on their heels, and the Thrashers made them pay for it, dearly.
Atlanta scored five unanswered goals to beat the Leafs 5-2, handing the withering Buds their fifth straight loss.
Contrarily, Atlanta has now won five in a row and seems to have found a groove as the season progresses.
Toronto-raised Glen Metropolit kicked off the impressive rally. After his goal he set up Vyacheslav Kozlov for two goals. Marian Hossa added a breakaway goal and Ilya Kovalchuk iced the cake with an empty-netter with just 56 seconds left.
The Leafs, who were visibly deflated, had goals from Darcy Tucker and Mike Peca.
In typical fashion, fickle fans at the Air Canada Centre booed the Buds off the ice.
Toronto now gets set to face Boston on Thursday and Detroit on Saturday.
