Holiday Fires A Concern

It’s supposed to be the happiest time of the year, but the holiday season is also one of the deadliest for house fires.
And more blazes start in the kitchen than any other room in the house.
“Deep frying is one of the most dangerous forms of cooking,” explains Toronto Fire Cpt. Mike Strapko. “Boiling oil could boil over just like water does, but it’s very flammable.and then you get a big fire and the fire hits the pot of grease, and you get a big explosion,”
So what should you do if it happens to you?
“If it’s too big to put a lid on it, get out,” advises the Captain. “Don’t try to fight the fire yourself.”
Holiday candles are also often the cause of blazes.
“We see a lot of flammable decorations around candles,” adds Toronto Fire’s Marla Friebe. “You got to keep those away from an open flame. We see many candles where the fire burns down right to the plastic bases, and then you’re looking at a disaster.”
One of the best gifts you can give yourself and your family is an escape route. If there is a fire in your home, know how to get out quickly and stay out.
