The transition from singer/pianist to songwriter has been as smooth as her voice.
Norah Jones stopped by Breakfast Television Thursday to give Toronto a taste of her latest CD entitled “Not Too Late”, her third release, performing three songs. The 27-year-old artist wrote or co-wrote every tune on the album.
“I’m proud of the songs,” she told BT’s Dina Pugliese.
“I started writing on the road. I realized I can’t wait ’til I get home because this tour is a year-and-a half long. I finally learned how to do that, make time on the road. It continued when I got home.”
While Jones’ style tends to be slow and easy the messages woven into the songs on “Not Too Late” are not. This time around her tracks have been inspired by environmental concerns and some are biting and quite political.
But she balances the album with a more intimate tone, with songs including “Wake Me Up”, about a lover’s goodbye, and “Thinking About You”, the first single, about a past love.
The singer said writing lyrics hasn’t come easy, but notes she’s not averse to tackling any subject.
“For me, writing lyrics is difficult because I have been playing music since I was little but I’ve only been writing lyrics for a short time,” she explained.
“I think writing, just like anything else, which is what I finally learned, you just have to keep doing it to get better at it. You have to write a few bad songs along the way to get to the good ones. Once I learned that, I don’t mind writing bad songs.”
Fans are obviously eager to hear what she has to say. “Not Too Late” has quickly become a success, going multi-platinum in just two days. Her debut CD, the hugely popular “Come Away With Me”, went diamond (10 million copies sold) over the course of three years.
While music dominates her artistic life, Jones has also worked on some acting projects, most notably a small-scale film starring herself, Jude Law and Natalie Portman called “My Blueberry Nights”.
“It was a different thing. It’s not like, ooh, let’s conquer Hollywood. It was a really cool opportunity that came up,” Jones said. “(Director Kar Wai Wong) asked me to do it. It seemed like a nice way to try something new.”
“It’s a road movie, kind of. We take a trip. My character takes a trip across the United States and meets all these people that kind of help her figure things out.”
