We’re number one!
You’ve heard sports teams say that about themselves for years.
But what happens when both claim to be number one?
That’s the crux of a bizarre controversy plaguing this year’s OFSAA “AAAA” tournament.
Both Eastern Commerce and Henry Carr can lay claim to being ranked as the best high school team in the GTA.
But only Eastern got the number one spot.
You won’t hear them arguing with the assessment.
“I think certainly we can make a case for being number one as Carr can make the case for being number one,” admits Eastern Commerce coach Roy Rana.
“We got it., you know. We’re a little bit surprised but we’re happy to have it.”
E.C. guard Chretien Lakusa is less diplomatic.
“We’ve been playing pretty good all season and head to head with Henry Carr, we did take the game.”
The two could wind up playing each other in the finals when all the teams meet in Hamilton next Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Then we’ll know for sure who really deserves that number one title and who is second best.
Here’s a look at the top seeds.
