Weekend Road Closure Latest Headache For Downtown Drivers

Whoever said getting there was half the fun never had to try to do it on the streets of Toronto during a spring weekend.

The fact that most of us don’t work on Saturday and Sunday gives city officials the perfect excuse to shut down major arteries to do some badly needed road repair.

Their latest task involves what many would argue is the heart of the downtown core.

Most of the intersection at Yonge and Dundas will be closed for the weekend, while crews start on TTC track reconstruction.

The barriers actually went up early, at 7am Friday, causing the expected problems during the morning rush.

And the work will create a whole host of headaches for anyone trying to navigate the already busy area over the next 72 hours.

Yonge St. will be closed northbound at Queen and southbound at Edward.

Dundas shuts down all eastbound lanes at Bay, and only those travelling westbound will be able to squeeze by.

The closures mean all the usual alternates – like Church, Jarvis, Bay, College and University  – will be heavier than normal and clogged with the cars that can’t get past the roadblock on the longest street in Canada.

Things aren’t scheduled to get back to normal until 5am Monday.

It’s just the latest problem for drivers who choose not to take public transit.

Last weekend, the Gardiner was closed for nearly 48 hours from Carlaw to the Humber for maintenance.

And next Saturday and Sunday, those on four wheels are in for even more good times, when the DVP joins the ‘can’t drive’ list.

The Don Valley will be gone from the 401 to the Gardiner from late Friday May 4th to early Monday May 7th, for some spring cleaning of its own.
