Anti-Deportation Rally Held In West End

While several GTA roads were shut down Saturday and thousands marched in support of marijuana, hundreds got together for another cause: to stop the deportation of immigrants the Canadian government labels “illegal” and protestors insist are anything but.

The march ran along Bloor St. past Christie Pits, primarily in support of one Toronto family. The Perez family has repeatedly tried to establish refugee status, but after two years is now facing deportation to Mexico.

“It’s very stressful for me because I have a deportation order very soon,” said Angelica Perez. “I don’t want to go back because it’s too much corruption … there’s no safety for me and my family.”

Angelica works as a cleaning lady, her husband is a grocery clerk. Organizers of Saturday’s rally claim as many as 80,000 people in Toronto live in fear of deportation.
