Ricky Williams, who spent an injury-plagued season with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts while serving an NFL drug suspension, has once again tested positive for marijuana, a source revealed Friday.
Williams apparently tested positive last month.
The former NFL rushing champion applied for reinstatement in April, but in light of the latest positive drug test, league commissioner Roger Goodell has been asked to delay reinstatement, the source adds.
Both the NFL and Miami Dolphins declined comment, as did Williams’ agent Leigh Steinberg.
Williams rushed for 526 yards on 109 carries for the Argos in 2006, but ended up on the sidelines for two months with a broken arm and Achilles tendon injury.
Argos president Keith Pelley said if Williams did actually test positive, his days in the CFL are likely numbered.
The CFL’s board of governors passed a code of conduct policy in the off-season preventing teams from signing players under suspension by other leagues, including the NFL.
“I can definitively say Ricky Williams will not be in the CFL this season,” Pelley said.
It’s not the first time Williams has attracted attention with his alternative lifestyle.
He was suspended in April 2006 by the NFL after violating the league’s drug policy for the fourth time, but recently said his interest in eastern philosophy had erased any desire for drugs.
