Power Still Off As Tenants Fume

Back in August 2003, there were numerous touching stories surfacing about people coming together during one of Toronto ‘s darkest stretches — the infamous blackout. The perpetual night seemed to unify the city. That sense of camaraderie has been overshadowed by mounting frustration at an apartment complex at 2247 Hurontario St. , in Mississauga , where up to 1000 people have been without power for five days.
Residents like Sophia Victor have had to endure cold showers, spoiled food, and the heart-thumping, leg-numbing strain of climbing mountains of stairs several times a day since the power was shut off following an electrical fire Friday. Now she wants compensation, and she wasn’t shy about letting senior property manager Harold Best know how she feels.
“A special thanks to all the emergency and social services for all their support…” Best began telling a CityNews camera before an enraged Victor interjected (pictured).
“Sorry, sorry, no! No special thanks to nobody,” she howled. “The special thanks I want is my rent money back and my food money!”
“I’m not here to create any problems. All I want is compensation back for my food and at least my rent,” she later added.
The company that owns the building has put up signs at the front entrance, letting tenants know that they will be reimbursed for any hotel costs they’ve had to pay.
In the meantime, engineers have been working nonstop to get the power up and as of Wednesday night, Mississauga mayor’s office has informed CityNews that power in the building will be partially restored by the evening hours. But it’s too little, too late for Victor. She’s planning on moving out.
