Louise Russo (centre) has a story to tell. The mother of three had no idea her life was about to drastically change when she walked into a store one April afternoon in 2004. In a matter of seconds, she became the victim of a drive-by shooting that left her paralyzed for life.
Ever since that day, Russo has dedicated herself to making sure that history doesn’t repeat itself and has become an well-known activist in putting an end to violence. Sunday’s walk, which she helped organize, was for everyone and anyone who’s been a victim of violence, including the most recent victim, 15-year-old Jordan Manners.
“A very negative thing obviously happened to her and her family and she’s turned that into something thats good for our community,” said York Regional Police Chief Armand La Barge.
Despite the lousy weather Sunday, participants raised $30,000 that will go right back to the community. The event also recognized a number of students who have innovative anti-violence ideas.
“There are people here that are optimistic and positive and want to bring the city in a positive direction,” said participant Frank Iaizzo.
“There’s no room for violence in our schools and in our communities,” Russo seconded. “This is what it’s all about … we want to give back to them, and let them come up with the ideas.”
