Alex Rios’ sacrifice fly in the eighth inning proved to be the difference on Tuesday night as the Toronto Blue Jays edged the visiting New York Yankees 3-2 at Rogers Centre.
The game featured a play for the highlight reels when Aaron Hill stole home in the seventh inning to give the Jays a 2-1 lead. It was just the second straight steal of home in Jays history and it sent the capacity crowd into a frenzy.
Jason Giambi hit a solo homer at the top of the inning.
The Jays twice let one-run leads slip away before Adam Lind scored on Rios’ fly ball to deep centre.
Shaun Marcum threw six shutout innings and Jeremy Accardo got the final five outs to secure the win.
It was the fifth straight loss for the demoralized Yankees and their 13 th defeat in their past 18 games.
They’re hoping that the return of Roger Clemens next Monday will help them turn things around.
