Argos Gear Up For Another Year

In the Canadian Football League, the coming of summer puts players back on the field and every team on even ground in the standings.

Sure, the Grey Cup doesn’t take place for six months, but it’s never too early to prepare, and on Wednesday, the Toronto Argonauts took their first steps of the 2007 season when camp opened at the University of Toronto ‘s Erindale campus.

“We’re going in with an open slate this year and let the guys just play it out,” said Argos head coach Michael Clemons. “Certainly we have an idea of what they can do … but we’re trying not to cripple ourselves with previous knowledge.”

The biggest preseason battle for the Boatman is at quarterback, where aging incumbent Damon Allen is battling perennial backup Michael Bishop.

“Ultimately they make the decision who they want to be their starter,” Allen acknowledged. “All you have to do is come out here and work hard every single day.”

Bishop echoed those sentiments.

“The only thing I can do right now is learn the offence and work hard on the practice field,” he said.

Dark horses in the race for starting pivot are former Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch and ex-NFL quarterback and Rutgers University  star Mike McMahon.

“I really want the job,” Crouch insisted. “I’m not here to be a backup or a third-team quarterback.”

Only quarterbacks and rookies reported Wednesday . The first full day of camp goes Sunday.
